Slab foundation building in Duluth MN - a level base planned for your soil and frost

Planning a home or garage on a slab and not sure how deep it has to go? We'll plan it around your soil and slope.

I walk every lot myself

I come out to every job myself, look at the slope, the drainage and where the building will sit, and ask what you're after. I'm also on the pour with our crew, so the person who planned it is there when it's placed.

Running this business since 2017

I learned concrete by pouring small slabs and walks, then on job sites, and started this business in 2017, nine years ago. We're based in Duluth and work in Superior, Hermantown, Cloquet and other cities around the area.

Licensed and fully insured, every job

We're licensed and fully insured, whether the job is a shed slab or a new home. Your satisfaction, guaranteed. To get started, call (218) 241-4178 or send your lot address and building size through the form on this page.

Slab foundation building in Duluth, MN

A slab foundation is a concrete base poured at ground level and designed to carry the whole building. All Star Duluth Concrete builds them for homes, additions, garages and small commercial buildings, and I plan each one around the lot's frost depth, soil and slope.

If you're building a new house, an addition or a garage on a slab, most of the work that matters happens below ground. Our winters push frost deep here, and plenty of lots around Duluth sit on wet ground or a slope, so the plan has to fit the site. The price moves with the slab's size, how deep the footings go, how much digging and fill the base needs, and whether a radon setup goes in.

The schedule usually turns on the permit and its inspections, and on the weather, since cold or wet ground can hold up a pour. I'd rather take an extra look up front and give you a plain answer, even when that answer is to wait. On the license side, Minnesota requires a residential building contractor or remodeler license from a company you hire directly for work across more than one skill on a home of one to four units.

Footings, soil checks and radon setup under your slab

Deep footings or a shallow design

Before anything gets dug, I sit down with you and talk through whether your slab should sit on standard footings below frost or on a frost protected shallow design, which is built to keep frost out so it can stay closer to the surface. I'll tell you which one I'd pick for your lot and why. If you'd rather have a basement or crawlspace, that's our foundation installation work. Either way the insulation has to go in right, because a poorly insulated slab can bring heat loss, moisture trouble and worse indoor air.

Checking your soil and water first

Minnesota allows a designed slab where the soil down to footing depth is sand, or pit run sand and gravel, and an engineer who knows soils can approve other sand. A detached one-story garage, carport or shed up to 1,000 square feet can sit on a slab on any soil but peat or muck. Water matters as much, since one soil survey found nearly half the land here stays wet for long stretches, with groundwater within two feet of the surface under about three quarters of it. Those are area figures, so I check your site before we plan.

A packed base and a planned pour

On a new home, we work the radon setup in before the first form goes up, because it runs under the slab. We dig out and pack the base rather than raking it level, and if the budget gets tight I'd trim the finish before the base. For winter pours, one cold-weather concreting guide says the ground should be at least 40°F and within 20°F of the concrete, and crews can thaw it with heaters or blankets. Business owners get the same groundwork under a concrete parking lot.

How a slab foundation job goes

  1. Call or send a message

Call (218) 241-4178 or send a message through the form, and we'll set up a time for me to come out. If you have house plans or a survey of the lot, set them aside for the visit.

  2. I walk the lot with you

I look at the site, ask what you're building and talk through the footing options with you. Then I follow up with a written estimate that lists what's included, so you can see what's in the price before you decide.

  3. Permits, base, pour and care

Once you say go, we line up any permits and a pour date, prep the base, then place and finish the concrete. You get care steps for the first season, because a new slab is still curing, slowly gaining strength, after the forms come off.

Slab foundation questions in Duluth

How deep does a slab foundation have to go in Duluth?

Standard footings in St. Louis County, which includes Duluth, have to go at least five feet deep because of frost, unless an engineer who knows soils decides otherwise. Minnesota's code also allows a frost protected shallow foundation, which needs less depth, so you dig less, pour less concrete, use smaller forms and save on cost.

Is a frost protected shallow foundation right for my Duluth lot?

It usually fits best on a slab-on-grade home where the lot has a moderate to low slope, going by general builder guidance. Your soil matters too, since the plan has to suit what's under the slab down to footing depth. I'll tell you which way I'd go once I've walked your site.

Does a new home slab in Duluth need a radon system and a permit?

Yes, a new home in Minnesota has to include a passive radon system, which pulls gas from under the slab and vents it outside, and the state requires a permit and inspections for it. The city also inspects any work that needs a permit. We handle the application when we're your contractor, and you can reach the city's building office at 218-730-5240.

How much does a concrete slab cost in Duluth?

A concrete slab in Duluth usually costs about $7 to $12 per square foot, and that's the going rate around here, not a quote from us. A foundation usually adds footing, base and radon work beyond a plain slab, so your written estimate lists what's included.
